My clients site was penalized due to link exchange. I was put to blame because he said I was the only one who's working on it.. The only work I have done was creating blog but not linking to the clients websites. Articles are unique, written manually.. Bottomline.. I didn't use any software neither do the link exchange. I have a doubt that my client is lying. I just want to know how to verified it based on the things that I have done. I'm not sure if this is possible. Will pm you the clients site details. Thanks in Advance.

If you want to find the links, use Majestic and verify your client's website. Once the website is verified, you should be able to find any dubious links and either contact the webmaster to have the links removed or use the disavow tool to remove all of the links (use caution when using the disavow tool and do not use it frivolously every time you don't like a link).

If you have Google webmaster access you will get some messages there regarding the penalty notice.

Thanks again for the advice... I will try majestic..

Trust you guts buddy. Most of the time, these "clients" doesn't have a clue and love to put all the blame on whoever they hired to work on their site. Ask him to give access to the site's GWMT so you can see if there are any messages from Google. It'll also show all the links that Majestic may have missed but what we need to look after is not the links from Majestic but what Google crawled for the site.

That's right, the "Links to Your Site" section under the "Search Traffic" tab in Google Webmaster Tools allows you to view and download links that are pointing to your website.

Hello. Please check your Google webmaster tools account, there your can see whereever you got a manual penalty or not.

Hope this helps

just check your client site with majesticseo, ahref and check whether those backlinks are built by you. you can simply find whether your client is lying or not :)

Hi Guys Thanks for the advice, I did check them on majestic and found some links that I didn't create. He admits that he hire another guy to do his campaign using blog. The thing is every post that they made has link pointing to there site. I'm not really sure if I should continue working with them specially with this trust issue. Anyway thanks again for your advice I really appreciate it.

Google webmaster tool can give you a detail information about website backlinks which have been penalized. You can also find that your website traffic has reduced when your website get penalized. This happens due to drop in website ranking and customers not able to locate your website Google paged search.
