Site dancing for 2+ months after dropping PBN link?

Hello,

Got a CPA site I'm trying to rank - got 2.5k words of content (recently updated) on the homepage, with 2 pillar articles with interlinking.

I dropped a PBN link with 100 RD, linking back to my site via the homepage. The site will be shortly lived I'd imagine, so I want to get as much juice as possible.

This is the only PBN link, the rest are social or blog comments (around 30 BL from unique domains).

I dropped the link in october, and I've been seeing massive dancing since then. I thought it was smoothing out, but a few keywords will come to page 6 then drop off completely. I haven't seen any definitive improvement or anything that sticks.

My pillar articles are ranking (page 5/6) and climbing, but the page with the PBN link is fluctuating.

Is this normal?

you have to keep throwing web 2.0 links at it and new articles ...

sounds like your pbn was a load of rubish or not built correctly.

Yeah I'm still building links despite the dance - keeping velocity fairly stable without being too precice to make it seem natural.

The PBN I restored from Archive.org - left it for just under two months. It was ranking for a few keywords #1, with a few on the first page for other terms. It's anchor profile is clean, and nothing has come up in Google console since I added it when I first restored it.

The PBN itself has articles, I added a few more images and interlinked them. Added sitemap, meta description, schema, favicon.

Have you ever seen dance for this long? The moneysite is around 5/6MO.

No the niche has been around for quite a while - the top sites have been around for over a year too (from what I can see from their registered date).

80-100+ according to Ahrefs. I'm tracking 15 keywords between two geos (UK/US). All I see is >100 an 80 and a 92 out of 30 keywords.

I don't have loads of experience with PBN's, but I wouldn't have thought it would take this long to see results.
 
I figured it would be best to provide more information so people can chime in.

The screenshot below is of my moneysite, from the 12th Oct to 30th Jan. I had only used blog comments as links for diversity, until the red line which is when I dropped my PBN link.

What do make of this - have you ever experienced something like this before?

Pretty cool tracker. I wanna ask what TLD was the domain, are you trying to rank on the google.com?
I haven't experienced anything like this but a friend had, his rank jumped after 2 months.

It's the Ahrefs tracker - the domain is .com and it's targeting Google US.

Hmm maybe there is hope
 
Did you add a single PBN link?

When you say you keep building links, do you think these could be the cause?

I haven't seen any new backlinks, and it has happened since I've dropped this PBN link so I doubt it.

Yeah It was a private site of my own - I keep building links steadily, but I doubt they're the cause because this has happened since I've dropped the link

This is my fear but I don't have the experience to know for sure. At least I can narrow it down to my PBN, but I registered the domain after checking it was clean.

- Anchors are fine
- Backlinks are all from niche relevant sites (extremely relevant)
- No messages/errors in Webmaster Console
- Archive and Snapshot are all good, and they line up with when the domain was registered and dropped

The only thing that I didn't check and probably should was the hosting history.
 
Yes and no. I've seen this with a few websites I've managed over the last couple years. I just would throw some backlinks at it with some fresh new content. Manual link building would probably be best. See if you can get some other blogs in your source to post about your niche and work together. Make it seem realistic and all unique content and it'll stop dancing usually faster from my experience.

The site is BH otherwise I would go for guest posting...etc. I have a few Web 2.0's pointed at the site with content written from me, but nothing overly special

There is no way of knowing. You just have to move forward with the best quality you can and hope that the rankings return. Often this type of sudden loss without a notification is an algorithmic penalty or the affect of an update. A lot of small updates constantly happen to Google now that their AI controls the updates, so it is certainly possible your drop is not eve related to the removal of a single PBN link.

Thanks for your reply, what you're saying makes sense - I'll keep it on the back burner just in case it's a long dance but I didn't think it was looking good.
