I been doing some SEO for some years. I always got this error.
I get pretty good rankigns on long-tail keywords.

BUT, i always get pretty bad ones on the Single Keyword of the current niche.

Lets say I get 1º position on "Freestyle scooter", "buy freestyle scooter" "freestyle scooter shop"

but the keyword "scooters" i have not results, it seems google penalize me by the single term.

Any advise? or idea?
keyword stuffing?

Thanks all!
cheers

Long tail and short tail keywords has their shortcomings but google can't penalize you for using a short tail keyword. May be you need to build more backlinks and extend the length of the content.

Long-tail keywords have certainly low level of competition compared to main keywords. As like scooters are more general words searched and targeted by more people, so imo you can rank more lsi's that will help you in ranking the single word, but it takes time. patience is the only key.

Ranking single word keywords is definitely tough. I wouldn't even focus my SEO efforts directly on them if I were you. A better strategy is to just work on longtails and gain authority, which will eventually help you rank better for single word keywords.

Our "online ancestors" have already exhausted single-word keywords that is why it's easier to use long-tail keywords. You aren't penalized, it's just that one-word keywords don't fly much anymore.

You will definitively will not rank good if you use short tail keywords ,using long tail keywords in your site only gives you better ranking
