Will hit sales a bit, but they are just too big to cause any real concern.
There is a positive in this tho...
Anyone dealing with Amazon as a sales/ affiliate platform should take note of their past and current business practice as an indicator of future moves.
So...
If you are doing anything with kindle, FBA or merch, be prepared for future cuts and plan your business accordingly.

I agree. This goes along with not putting all your eggs in one basket. I found out the hard way that things can change almost overnight. Back in the day, the Google panda and penguin changes killed an authority site that I'd had for years basically overnight. It was a site that I'd built from scratch, had over 100 articles I'd written myself and was paying me well every month.
Then Amazon Kindle changed their payouts to writers 3 or 4 years ago and my income went down 90%. Amazon gave a months notice on that change. This latest cut in affiliate commissions is no surprise.

This is frustrating, but there are always other affiliate program out there. Expect online retailers directly under them to start ringing the dinner bell for those who have been burned by this and future changes.
I doubt this change will bother Amazon much, if at all. Once you get to be their size, it takes a vast sum of capital and time to move the revenue needle. This is what makes them a 'safe' investment for stockholders. If you total up affiliate sales I doubt it makes up more than 1% of total sales.
If someone has real numbers I'd be interested to see them.

The thing is I actually think this might impact them sort of. Their competitors will grow bigger.
All of those 1.4B will not just remove the amazon links, but replace them to a competitor. On that note; anyone still having an affiliate site linking to amazon should switch asap (obviously).

I think there are only a handful of shareholders who understand how the affiliate system really works or how large it is.
This isn't the kind of issue the market will respond to until either:
a) another company clearly starts gaining from taking over Amazon's affiliates--enough that mainstream news outlets report on it.
or
b) online retail revenue drops enough to be lower than their guidance.
