Simple question about Linux

Hi,

I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu and I can't say I am happy about it.

It deleted my Windows setup without warning, it hangs when I try to install a simple program like macchanger and it seems that the console is nowhere to be found. Same as Synaptic.
For the record, I did create a partition to install Ubuntu on.

The only thing they have succeeded to do is attempt to look like a failed Windows clone in my humble opinion, disposing of all the nice things Linux has to offer and replacing it with useless junk.
I don't care about the cloud, I don't want to be a text writer when I use Linux, don't need a link to the calc on my desktop and don't appreciate the workspaces as they are now on my 15" screen.

I won't claim to know what I am doing with Linux but I have used Ubuntu in the past and it wasn't anything like it is now.
Before, I had it set up in multiboot without any serious problems, the console was available in two clicks and it never crashed. (Same pc)
Now it even managed to download slower than Windows while it used to be faster, on the same connection...

I didn't check any further yet, already decided this OS has to go. I would use BT before I would use this %$#@. Unless they improved.
The current version of Ubuntu sucks!

I have a very simple question really: Is there anything out there that sort of works like Ubuntu 9?
You know, simple, usable, no clutter, respect for your system... The things one would expect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the Mint distro

it prob didnt delete your windows partition it prob just over wrote your boot loader should be easily fixable with a g0og search

I know, but that is not the point. I expect a decent OS to adjust. Especially if I used the same OS in an older version I get a few expectations.
Other than that, this version sucks.

I felt just like you when they went from 10 to 11 and shoved Unity down my throat. However, I gave it a second chance with 11.10 and I actually like it now for the most part. It's been refined quite a bit in my opinion.

They're doing some good stuff with Ubuntu for Android, bringing an OS to the mobile platform... might be some cool things that sprout out from that initiative.

First thing I did was remove the useless icons from the nav bar on the left, just click and hold and you can move those items to the trash pretty easily. Ubuntu does have a steep learning curve, but it's not so bad as it used to be.

I've heard good things about Mint as well, but haven't tried them out yet. Join a forum, there's a lot of quick tips out there that will let you customize your install the way you like it. You can change anything to behave the way you want to in Ubuntu... try saying that with Windows!

Seems youa re complaining mostly about the interface. I would say try XUbuntu. It may be to your liking. (xfce4 packages)
If you like, I can help you setup a very nice Unity + XMonad configuration.

I can appreciate them assuming I want all my gadgets connected as most people do but they should have it as an option, not as a assumption.
It is a computer, nothing else. If I want to run it on an Android I will look for a version aimed for that.
If I want to connect my camera it should pop up a message box or wait till I start the appropriate program. Same thing with the phone.

I do agree there is a learning curve with Linux, but the same thing applies to Windows. They are just different and people shouldn't expect it to operate like Windows. Right now, they are copying Windows and failing.

I also agree that one of the many good things about Linux it that it is adjustable. But I don't want to start adjusting it just to make it usable.
Not to mention that the Console is one of the key elements and should be easy to find.

Also, I saw that just right clicking gets rid of the clutter, but it shouldn't be there in the first place. They took pride in having an uncluttered desktop once.

Going to try Mint now, it looks promising.

I know the above may not sound very nice, it is intended in a good way though.
I am just a bit frustrated. I used to love working with Ubuntu.

Erm, isn't the interface the most important thing? Shouldn't the console be easy to find? Isn't one of the main benefits of Linux that it is stable?
It fails on all of those.

I appreciate the offer to help me set it up, but it is not what I need.

It's cool, I totally understand... I've been there. It still takes me a day or so to get things fine tuned and tame my computer after a fresh install... it's not for everyone for sure. Linux would do well to gain some UI designer influence ... right now it's just a bunch of us nerds.... and we only THINK we can do UI.

The more important thing for me is that I'm not having my data mined and associated to my name for later solicitation... that crap annoys the hell out of me. I've got a wary eye on Canonical too, as I expect them to pull that crap in a few releases.... I haven't found anything perfect, but so far Ubuntu is still the lesser evil to me.

Hope Mint does it for you

Actually, Mint turns out to work great. Very easy to use, no hangups and when installing it gave the expected warnings and options. Ubuntu just lost a customer.

I have set it up for 90% now, within two hours. Lets see anybody do that in Windows. Things like the desktop image are left but that is no biggie.

I agree on programmers not knowing how normal folks think, it shows in just about everything and its quite refreshing. Easier on the eyes in design too.
There is nothing wrong with test users though, they can prevent customers running off.

Mint offers the console even within 2 clicks even though they changed the name, it boots faster, no clutter. Exactly what I wanted.
With synaptic it took 5 minutes to install the programs needed.

Data mining is not something that Linux can stop I think. it supports flash and php. With proper use of those, mining becomes very easy I think, especially for evildoers like Google, Facebook and the like. (yes, in one breath)

It does however support things that Windows frowns upon and it is harder to hack.
I am also weary of Windows when it comes to privacy. I think it is suspicious that you need patches on an OS that hasn't even been released yet and the OS never seems to get hack-proof, other than msdos perhaps.
Then again, I am not a coder so what do I know.

First off, it didn't delete your windows partition. YOU did that. With linux, you are in full control of everything, for better or worse. Its like driving a car on manual vs automatic.

Also, I like GNOME Shell rather then Unity. 0 clicks to get to any application + much more streamline GUI.



Not so 'busy' as unity.

Now you've got me thinking about clearing off another partition to test Mint out on.

... like I need another project, hehe!

Ubuntu is garbage since they dropped gimp.

From your perspective it is also my fault it crashed when installing a simple program since I clicked the button.

When you can give a credible answer as to why Mint checks for other OS and offers a multiboot while Ubuntu didn't, do come back and have a chat with me.
I created a partition for Ubuntu as I have done a few times before and never had it delete a previous installed OS.

Also, I don't care for an OS that requires me to install a different shell to make it usable. I don't care for an OS that succeeds in being slower in downloads than Windows and I don't care for people that just point a finger and shout "IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" instead of being helpful.

If you want to compare OS to cars, Ubuntu used to be a Mercedes, now its a Skoda.

If all you want to do is post about how much better you are than another: Place an add somewhere.

The above is just my humble opinion of course.

I can't talk for others but Mint makes me very happy.
