I had a small site with no backlinks ranking on the first page. Position 9#. I tried different on page SEO and it bounced to #15th place. I then reverted it back and it bounced to 11# place.

I decided I would do some link building so I posted some blog comments using an alias name anchor and made a web 2.0 with a naked url.

It bounced to 5th place in a few days.

I go to look at the site yesterday, this is a few days after it was in 5th place and now I see its in #21st place.

I can tell you that this site without any backlinks would never have bounced past page 2. I have many sites with similar comp and built the same where I do no backlinking and they never go past page 2 ever.

My question is what is wrong with my backlinking here? Why/how could it have made it worse. Im talking like 4 blog comments and 1 naked 2.0 url. Thats it. How?

Are the comments on relevant blogs ? what OBL ? PR or DA/PA ?

Also waiting just days is not really a good indication, it might well bump up again in time.

Your best bet is not to do blog comments anyway unless they are very relevant to your niche or product, it sounds like social signals might be enough

Try building up some solid web 2.0s as a foundation and maybe a high pr link or two. It's most likely a dance but building a foundation is a good thing to do either way.

Well 1 exact match anchor link is from some directory I used for every site similar. Every single site I have used with that directory hasnt been hit and is on page 1 so I am assuming that link is okay.

My site is about weight loss and I commented on 2 pages of a pr3 site on Paleo foods. I would say thats relevant. Then I made a web 2.0 with a naked url. the web 2.0 has the target keyword in its domain and the title of the post I linked from. So its relevant too.

Honestly I mimicked the above steps to an absolute tee on another weight loss site I have and its ranking 5#, the only difference is I used a PR link rather than a 2.0. I was under the impression when sites dance they dissappear. My site is on page 3 spot 21# and its privacy policy 22# and disclaimer 23#, which seems odd their all clustered.

Wait a little longer before reaching any conclusions. Too much dance goes on from time to time.

I think it sounds like a Google dance to me. How long has the domain been alive with content? How long since you last optimized the on-page content?

Keep building quality links and you should only see positive results unless you over-optimized your on-page, have non-diversified anchor text or build links on crap domains/pages.

Unfortunately SEO is not quick and we are at the mercy of Google. It sounds like your doing things right for the most part but take it easy on the blog comments and focus on quality.

Yea you are correct. In regards to your on page comment above. I was holding position 9 from conception with 1 exact match anchor at a directory.

I was fucking around with the On-page SEO to see if I could rank for a different but related term by adding some primary keyword variations to the body of the content on the homepage.

This bounced me to position 15 and I still wasnt ranking for the keyword variations, so I reverted my on-page back to what is was. I bounced to position 11.

I then said fuck this and made those 4 blog comments and one naked url link via web 2.0.

About 2 days later I was in position 5#.

(left site alone as 5# is fine for me)

2 days later (today) I am in position 22#.

    My thoughts are either:

    A: its a dance?

B: the 2.0 linking article or blog comments just got indexed today and somehow had a negative SEO effect?

Other than that I have no clue and is why I asked? I'm new to SEO so I have no prior experience to base stuff on.

I'm was saying: when he continues link building he should watch out for the number of blog comments he builds. I was looking at the ratio of blog comments (4:1) that are being built and I don't think that is a good ratio to keep as he continues. That is what I meant. You are right: 4 blog comments is nothing to be concerned about. I think it is sound advice to not build too many blog comment links if you want rankings that last.

To the OP: I think your website is dancing. Give it a couple weeks to settle especially if it is a new domain.

lots of variables to consider. The competition, industry, tons of outside factors. Best thing I can tell you is to watch the top 4 sites, are they shuffling around alot, if not pay attention and duplicate.

Don't do blog commenting. It's an ancient SEO strategy that doesn't work anymore. Also, if you don't plan to build backlinks for the web 2.0 backlink, don't do that either. If you only want to build a few backlinks, I'd recommend to get a contextual backlink from another blog or a website from your niche as well as a few backlinks from different forums that are also related to your niche.

I can pretty much say with certainty the site is either slapped/improper SEO or its dancing. The comp is so low here that there isnt even 2 pages of sites actually about the topic at hand. I know with no backlinking Id have been on the bottom of page 1.

The top page sites are all fucking spam. The ones that arent spam are spun. The spun articles have a density of 3.5%. I have a density of 2.5%. Just for shits I dropped my keyword density to 2% and am now at #19. I will reduce it too 1.2% and see what happens. But something is clearly a little off here.

This little site is a $100/month earner and im broke so I am determined to get him back.

The blog comment is simply for anchor diversity. I only used generic and alias name anchors. Blog commenting seems to still be a solid SEO strategy for link dilution. However on thin sites it seems stupid imo. You're right contextual would be the best but I dont really have any way to get a good contextual link.

Let it dance, many many times my sites dance down then come back a little stronger than they were.

You gotta quit freaking over a change for few days, worry after a week or more.

I had a carpet cleaning site nosedive last week, lost 3 to 5 points over 10 keywords. The last few days it has made that back and more, and pulled some other keywords up with it as well. A few are up over 10 points from before the fall.

Well sometimes it happen when your targeted keyword suddenly goes down. But i am sure if you keep your work with quality you can definitely get back all your rankings.
