I was messing around with UAW autoblogs, and just for the hell of it I decided to put the plugin on some blogs with city names. Oddly enough I am getting hits for completely random keyword strings related to the city.
You could have a completely general autoblog publishing any type of article. For example, one of the articles was about hiring a nanny and the keyword string was "rates for a nanny in chicago."
By virtue of me having chicago in the TLD (and the topic was completely unrelated to the rest of the domain name), I got a hit.
I think that two people could have the exact same blogs and still get traffic if they just had different city names in their TLD. It also might be possible to for example create a wordpress MU blog with subdomains.
Lets say you register chicagoshoppingsomething.com and then you have subdomains for each category. For example you publish one about tooth whitening and rewrite all the titles so that they include the cities name.
Then you have people who will type things like "teeth whitening in chicago" and your site will come up first because you have chicago in your domain name. You will beat out that PR5 tooth whitening site because google places so much emphasis on the TLD.
For example.
is PR 5 when you type in teeth whitening, but type in charlotte teeth whitening and you end up with this site,
, which is PR1. Granted for a large city you may not rank 1st for tooth whitening, but there are a lot of long tails that people type into the search engines with a city name in them.
I am not saying that one page will get you megahits, but if you had a huge MU installation with 30K or so PLR articles trickled out at 5 a day, I could see this really adding up if you picked a large city. There is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty, anyone who has submitted the same articles to a 100 article directories has noticed that the only pages that get stuck in the supplementals are repeats of an article on the same class C IP.
If you have say 20 people copying the same PLR article, Google will give the top ranking to whatever TLD makes the most sense. If someone types teeth whitening into the search engine and your TLD is "mortgage rates", the guy with the TLD of "teeth whitening" will rank first. If you take these same articles and have a TLD of "chicago teeth whitening" and someone searches a tooth whitening term with Chicago in it, google will rank you first.
Not to mention the adsense clicks should pay out a lot more since you are geotargeted.
I intend to test this further, but I think there could be a lot of potential here.
