First of all, check out my guide for building and ranking sites - https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/building-and-ranking-sites-in-2020-the-ultimate-guide.1280323/ - I don't want to go over the same things I mentioned in that guide but if you read through it there are some tips for making your site successful.

If you are an industry insider then you can add even more value because you have lots of knowledge I assume, being in the building trade.

Most importantly, don't think about this like a little sideline venture - treat it in the same way you would if you were starting your own offline business - invest your time, energy and money wisely and build something that you are proud of - thats the way to stand out from the competition.

And yes of course, you want to also be promoting products - in the DIY niche, amazon affiliates and the promotion of DIY tools would seem fairly logical to me. Don't make anything overly promotional though, you want to add value with guides, tips and product reviews and then just sprinkle in the amazon product links because, by their nature, the people reading your blog and fairly likely to purchase products anyway.

On a side note, when you are replying to more than one person consecutively, please use the multi-quote feature as it keeps the thread neat and tidy :)
