Similar IP Address - 3 Way Linking

Hi,

So, I had an abandoned website I had in the past that I would like to revive again and was considering 3 way linking. Where I would offer one of my websites to backlink to someone else in return for a backlink back to my main/money site.

So, abandoned website -> your website --> to my money website

My only concern is that, when i check the IP address of my abandoned and money website, they have the same hosting, but very similar IP addresses eg. XX.XXX.XXX.130 and XX.XXX.XXX.24 (the only difference, the last few numbers). I understand G doesn't like direct 1:1 linking, would this fall under the same category?

Will this be an issue? Is it only Exact match IP addresses a concern or does this also apply to very similar IP Addresses? I'm not familiar with the breakdown of IP addresses in general.

I'm not sure how google assesses these things today, but in the past (4-5+ years ago) they used to NOT like interlinking between sites hosted on the same C-class IP.

More specifically, your sites are hosted on XX.YYY.ZZZ.130 and XX.YYY.ZZZ.24 and this format is called IP4 format (it's the old format of IPs, albeit still widely in use, but nowadays - with the introduction of IP6 format - google might have changed things around, which is why I said that I don't know how they're treating same C-class IP interlinking anymore)

But anyway, in the example above the ZZZ part of the IP is the C part of the IP (hence the name C-class IP), while XX is the A part, and YYY is the B part (the 130 and 24 numbers are the D parts, of course).

So, in your case, changing links between sites hosted on the same C class (which IS what's happening in your case) is bad normally (again, I'm saying "normally" because I don't know what google's stance is on this type of interlinking with the introduction of the new IP6 system). So yes, interlinking your sites in the way that you explained would be bad (if the same rules of 4-5+ years ago still apply) and COULD get both your sites, and the site of your partner into trouble.

However, since you're not completing the wheel, I think you might get away with it, especially if you don't operate in ultra competitive / profitable niches like finance, education, business, medical & health, etc... If you only get a mere 100 or so visitors per month for your sites google might close an eye to your shady tactics, especially if that's the only 3-way interlinking you have. But if you were to get a lot of traffic and have millions of keywords ranking in google and especially if you were to complete the link wheel (abandoned website -> your website --> to my money website --> abandoned website) your, and your partner's sites would almost guaranteed be penalized.

Very interesting and appreciate the detailed answer. Exactly what I was looking for in terms of the breakdown. I don't plan to ever complete the link wheel, more of a one direction of linking. After considering your answer, it'd be safe to avoid this practice, as our website does perform well, just not worht it.
