Is silo structure truly necessary if competition isn't too tough or just using no category page & supporting articles and just creating blablah.com/topic for each post you want to rank for and just interlinking with relevant content. Or do I really have to do blablah.com/parent/child or is blachblah.com/topic enough for each article.

It depends on how close the topics are.

If you have a site solely for baby products, SILOing is not necessary.

On the other hand, if your site has articles on both baby products and cars, SILOing becomes critical.

TBH, I personally believe that setting up a proper SILO structure is better either way to give yourself room to grow and offer your readers a great user experience.
