Let's say that I have a car parts website that I want to silo, and I have two options for structuring it:

A) bhwcarpartreviews.com > Chrysler > Dodge > Engines > Hemi > Dodge Hemi Review

or

B) bhwcarpartreviews.com > Engines > 8 Cylinder > Chrysler > Dodge > Dodge Hemi Review

Would it be better to create top-level silo pages for manufacturers or parts, and why? Or are both approaches acceptable?

Both acceptable. I would do my keyword research and try to find out whether people rather go by brand or part when searching. I for one would always start with a brand/product name for a spare part, but who am I? Definitely not your target group ;)

If I did both, with the article being categorized under two silos, would that break the silo structure?

For example, the top-level silos would be:

Chrysler, GMC, Ford, Engines, Wheels, Body Kits

And the "Dodge Hemi Review" article would be in both the Chrysler and Engines silos.

I look for parts online, I am not technical with cars. I personally would look for the part first, brands would confuse me. Just giving my input for OP
