What do you guys think of signature links (homepage links and deep links)? Are they a good component in link-building or is it detrimental to SEO?

I'd like to also add that I am a legit member of a few forums (just like I am of this one - my account "memzjo"got deleted for some reason but I've been around for a good 9-10 months) and am not asking if I should spam them. Simply if I should add a link to my signature on these sites.

Very risky, it's better to nofollow them if it's your main money site.

It's not really that simple.

If you only have forum signatures linknig to your site from 10k different domains and no other links to speak of, you are going to have a hard time ranking.

However, if used as part of your link building efforts they do add up to a good link profile.

It's all about how your link profile looks compared to all the data Google has on sites, averages, link patterns, etc.

It's all about a good mix, but to be honest many top authority sites get tons and tons of links from forums (even from not relevant forums), however they have such a huge link diversification that it only gives them more power.

Thanks for the answers guys, I'm only beginning to think of adding signature links because I've found it quite hard to get links in any other way. IM is not my main vocation so looking after PBNs and keeping track of VPSs (scripts and bots and the like) are not really things I want to look into.

So for diversification I should add links in various other locations, like Article Directories and Doc upload sites and the like?

Anyway thanks again!
