Should you redirect WordPress drafts to the homepage?

Since Google released the new helpful content update, I want to edit a couple of underperforming posts. Until I find the time to do so, I want to switch them to drafts. Should I redirect these to the homepage until I republish them? Can Rank Math take care of that automatically? There are quite a few them, so that would be great!

Thanks!

Why would you choose a 302 over a 301? I know it's a temporary redirect, but actually, I'm not sure if I will republish all of them. It's around 50% of the website's content, equaling around 300 pages. Maybe I should first 302 all of them, and later 301 the ones which won't be republished?

Sort through and 302 redirect post you may republish to about/contact page, not home page.

Ones you are throwing away leave as 404.

What about redirecting them to their category pages?

I thought 404 pages were bad for SEO. If not, wouldn't it be easier to switch all of them to drafts without redirects?
