Should you link to your own sitemap.xml file?

I know you should create a sitemap and submit it to Google Webmaster tools.

But I've seen some people put in their footer a "sitemap" link that links to www.domain.com/sitemap.xml

Is there a reason for/against doing this?

i dont see any real reason for it to harm you... you may want to add rel="nofollow" on it so google doesnt pass any page rank love to it though!

if you've submitted your sitemap to google and yahoo it seems kinda pointless, i maybe mistaken but i think the SE robots are designed to seek your sitemap.xml by default anyway... it maybe hearsay - as i havent actually tested it out to prove otherwise!

There is no reason at all, most people provided Sitemap on their frontpage with generated static html file (more human friendly) and not xml version.

I use a generated .xml file (WP plugin generated).

So just delete the link from my homepage since G has a copy uploaded already?

I always add sitemap.xml to the footer, as it does not harm you but can provide easier access to other Search engines besides G.

If you use html sitemap it helps in onpage SEO for internal links. It adds value in the eyes of google. I have attached another pdf in another thread related to this strategy. I have attached plugin as well.
