Should you do link exchanges with sites with a lower PR than you?

I don't really know much about IM and SEO and only stumbled across this site a couple of weeks ago but I've got an accidental PR3 blog that I exchange blogroll links with pretty much everyone and there are a lot on my homepage. I've got a plugin though that makes the blogroll only come up on the homepage so it's not on every page.

My question is, is this harming my PR? Should I only be exchanging links with PR2+ or PR3+ sites or just as many as possible?

I've currently got 56 - is that a bit excessive?

56 does seem a bit much. I would suggest that you do exchanges with sites that are relevant to your niche. Diverse links are good however it would not be good for a Christian bookstore to have a porn link. :)

My site is a music blog and nearly all of the others are music blogs, of varying quality.

It would be better for you to have two music sites.

Site 1 your main site
Sute 2 your link site with some spin content

Ask sites to link to site 1 in exchange for a link from your site two, this way no one is harmed, you get much more juice from the links this way, just make sure you never link site 1 and 2.

By the way what's your strategy for getting links from other blogs? And how long did the 50 plus links take you?

So it can be counter productive to have your link on lots of other popular blogs in your niche? Why?
