Some companies do it because it's considered an entertainment site, security hazard, or something not work-related. Other companies consider Facebook an essential part of marketing-- to network with others. What do you think?

Its all about intention...What are the employees doing?

10 minutes spent on FB's ad manager is different from 10 minutes of helping Suzie's Farmy monstrosity...

FB is extremely important to business when used for business!

As an IT consultant I am fully aware that IT management is struggling with whether social media is productive or obstructive for companies and their employees. Software is being developed and policy and restrictions are being decided everyday by IT managers. The security of company networks are at stake but the potential for innovation using social media is a large enough carrot for the discussion of how to properly utilize the medium continues. Palo Alto networks came up with a whitepaper which will explore the issues surrounding social media in the workplace. It is important to not only understand the immediate benefits of doing business how one lives, but the threat it presents to a company's greater ROI and productivity when it comes to the server's safety and security.

Our excuse is that we need it to respond to each others requests quicker :)

There is no need for Facebook at work. It is only a time waster.
If somebody wants to use it they can get an app for their smart phone if it is that important.

Thats even worse come on!

I have 3 monitors at work, if I decide to jump on facebook for a few minutes then I can do that while working, imagine using a mobile as well - LOl come on

If facebook doesn't bring in any dollars for the main business I would have it blocked and put restrictions on cell phone use as well... if your paying them to work you are paying them to work not do their own thing.....

A few minutes a day doesn't kill anyone.

At my old job as manager for a dental lab, the policy was up to me, and I let it go.

Texting, FB, it was fine on one condition, it does not significantly slow you down.

If I asked you to get something ready to go and you were texting, didn't really care, I would assume that a person could multi-task or prioritize, if it wasn't ready in a few minutes but you were still texting, I'd go grab the cell phone and toss it into my drawer.

Here at my place now it's basically the same thing, as long as it doesn't make a noticeable effect on your output in a negative way, I don't care. I think for the most part it helps with the afternoon bog down, being able to take a couple otherwise idle minutes, sip on a coffee and see what your aunt bobby joe looks like riding a racing lawn mower on a mud track on FB.
