I have a old website/blog(10 years), with some very old content on it, should I update the content, or make a part 2?

I have stuff like "How to optimize your site for SEO in 2019", and it's in the permalinks aswell. Should I update the posts, and titles and permalinks, or create a part 2/sequel to them?

Very unsure with how to approach this, I don't want to mess with my site's standing, albeit I'm not ranking THAT well to mess things up, what do you guys think?

Hey Iykathe ! You can Either update or Make a sequel ! but here are some general recommendations:
  • Update the content only If the information in the post is still relevant, but simply outdated, you can consider updating the content to reflect current best practices. This will not only make your content more accurate, but also show that you are keeping up with changes.
  • Create a part 2/Sequel : If the information in the post is still relevant but the methods or approaches have changed, you can create a sequel post that covers the updated information. This will not only show that you are up-to-date rather gives you a chance to engage with your audience
whatever you choose, be sure to update the titles and permalinks reflect the changes to your content. Also maintain a healthy mix of new and older content on your site to show that you are consistently creating and updating valuable content for your audience.

If you change the permalinks then your ranking would have the effect.

So I don't suggest editing them if you don't want to mess up with your rankings.

Try creating new posts for stuff like "How to optimize your site for SEO in 2019" But don't add the year in the permalinks because later if you want to edit the content, so could do it easily without changing the permalinks.

Thanks so much! Good to see you around, I think I remember you from back in the day.

Do you think if I update the post I should change the date, and repost it on social platforms as a new article, etc?? Most of my content is still relevant but just needs slight updates for the times, I have SEO advice from 2012 on the site lol. Super nervous about this lol and have a LOT of content to revamp. Appreciate you!

If you have year mentioned in the url then you should get rid of the year and apply a 301 redirect to that URL. You should be fine after that.

Next, since you said there are old SEO related posts from the year 2012 so you can safely update the content in that page. Since the page holds a good age I think they will have a good chance to climb high in the ranking provided you build backlinks for them and write good keywords rich stuff.

BTW how many pages do you want to update in total?

if you get traffic - update, if no traffic post part 2 to have another change to get more traffic.

Great idea on the year thing, no way I wanna keep updating these year over year, and was a bad decision to begin with lol.

I have roughly 100 pages to update, maybe a bit less. It's all marketing/social tips from 2012-2020, most of the advice holds up but definitely needs some polish.

Do you guys think I should change the date in Wordpress to today, if I update it, or just leave it as is?

It is good that you have under 100 pages that needs update. It means that you can easily manage them.

Do not change the publish date of these posts. It will have no impact on rankings. Instead, add an 'Last Updated on' in the article. You can find how to do this in this article - kinsta dot com/blog/last-updated/

'Last updated On' gives a good impression on the readers. It tells them that the content they are reading is up to date and still relevant to what they are searching for today.
