Should i start a blog?

Hello, i am wondering if i should start a blog, that focuses on News.

The reason why i am asking is because i am still in high school, and do not have a whole lot of time.

And also are news blogs still profitable?

Response is simple. If you do not have time, do not do it.

You should start a blog because you want it. Think about profit later .

sure, why not? do it if you have time!

All my sites are technically blogs. Blogs can be flexible in that you can make them extremely complex or keep it simple. A great option if time isnt on your side.

"News" is a great way to keep a blog going because you will constantly be updating it but you got to have a niche.

Speaking for the OP, it's not that the OP doesn't have time. In fact HE DOES have time, just "not a whole lot of it." Read the thread starter closely and you'll see where he says that he doesn't have A LOT OF TIME. The question he seeks an answer for is whether or not a blog that focuses on news / current events would be a profitable start up venture. That's a darn good question to ask because many people are news junkies and I bet some of them would like to have a fraction of the success that a news blog like the almighty HuffingtonPost has achieved. The OP is just like a lot of people: He's busy with work and/or school and god knows what else life is bound to throw at us and thus the amount of time he has to spend working on a blog isn't non-existent but limited.

From his post you can tell that it's obvious that he wants to start a news / current events blog that he can monetize. This is a guy is a little different from many IMers in that he didn't go to EBay, Amazon, or Clickbank to find the hottest item to sell online to build a a blog around. No, the OP wants to have his cake and eat it too by blogging about a subject he's passionate about, nothing wrong with that if he could just figure out whether the blog would be profitable or not.

Please don't think that I'm a fan of SiteSell, I'm not (SiteSell is a course that teaches newbies how to make money with blogs). But I do know that SiteSell implores their students to blog, and then monetize, something they're passionate about. They want their students to blog about something they have a strong personal interest in. If you like to fish, SiteSell would have you consider blogging and monetizing a blog that focuses on a niche related to fishing.

So it's clear that the OP wants to blog about a subject that he's passionate about, and that would be current events / news. This post is a little wordy, but let me summarize it by saying that the OP wants to know 3 things:

1) he wants to invest what little time he has wisely, and so he'd like advice from veterans who post here at BHW as to whether or not he should invest precious time in an attempt to monetize a CURRENT EVENTS / NEWS BLOG that he could profit from.

2) and as far as monetizing it is concerned, he wants to know if a current events / news blog is a saturated niche that he'd get slaughtered in, in that it would probably be a total failure in generating a cash flow that he could bank on.

3) he wants to know how he could monetize it. AdSense, Clickbank, Amazon ads?... etc, etc.

I wish I could answer the OP's question about monetizing a news blog but I can't. I can't because since I'm new at IM I am still stuck in dummy mode. Maybe you can answer his question. Maybe you could tell him where to go (Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Market Samurai?) or tell him what tool or method he could utilize that would allow someone like him to analyze the possibility of monetizing a NEWS BLOG.

if you don't have time don't go for the new blog, how would you keep up with all the braking news?

Time is your greatest asset, maybe start a blog now and post once a week.
Post the most interesting news you come by, do a little back-linking, just a couple hours a week.

Then over time your investment WILL appreciate.

He didn't say that he doesn't have time. He has time to invest in a blog. And it's not hard to keep up with the latest local, national or world news when you have the Internet at your fingertips. Much better than it was in the 70's when society had to wait for the radio or television to broadcast the latest news.

Never start a blog if you do not have a whole lot of time updating it daily. You may hire some blog writers to keep your blog updated if you can afford paying them. Profits will come later when you start getting a lot of visitors to your blog.

Nothing beats experience. Start a blog, start a site. Get used to running things. It will give you an idea of how search results work. Don't expect to get rich
If anything else, you'll start maturing your domain with content and authority which you can build on in the future.

Yeah i don't have a lot of time to cover all the latest breaking news, but doing articles about the most interesting is a good idea. But some days i will have less than an hour to do work, and am unsure if i will be able to maintain the site and keep a good following.

You won't know till you Go for something niche, not mainstream... post for a few weeks. Read this forum for a few simple link building techniques. Start learning onPage SEO especially in relation to post titles and keywords. You'll be surprised how quick you start to get readers, and your posts start to rank for longtail keywords that people are looking for. Once you get the hang of that, and see how it all works together you can start looking into dedicated tools for finding keywords that get some good traffic in your niche and start going after those. But you gotta start somewhere!

Xnefoo, I think you better come back to tell people that you do indeed have a certain amount of time to invest in a blogging venture. You should do that because as you can see for some strange reason people here are assuming that you don't have any time to invest. I don't know why they're making that mistake (blame it on Red Bull? ). And then they're ignoring an important question where you ask the forum: Are NEWS BLOGS still profitable? Sure, CNN and the HuffingtonPost are news blogs that rake in the money but of course they're big players with a famous name. I personally don't know if a regular person, or someone in high school like you are, can monetize a NEWS BLOG whether they have 1 hour a day to invest or 10 hours a day to invest in their blog.

The sooner you start, the better off you'll be. I'm sure there are many of us on BHW that wished we started a lot sooner. Just remember, it doesn't have to be perfect from the get-go. Just take action.

Unless a judge ordered you to perform so many hours of community service work for a crime you committed, something tells me that once you go into your Wordpress control panel and see traffic start to build up you'll find time to tend to your blog. Building an audience and going from zero-to-hero in the traffic department has a way of changing a persons way of thinking. Especially when the increased traffic leads to hard cash that you can spend on high priced concert tickets, Sony PS4, a decent used car that's not an eyesore, and countless other goodies that appeals to someone in high school.

K thanks everyone! I will take action and start a blog, i might not have time but i will try my best to keep it updated.

I would use blogger..It's the quickest way for traffic.
