should i pursue this niche?

hi,

i have much time on my hands i want to build a new website:

the niche is photography ( i know it's a very competitive niche, but please read on)

I want to create a blog with photography news and price watch over all popular lenses and m4/3, dslr bodies.

I will also promote somo photo albums, photography tutorial books via amazon and create my own ebooks.

I'm in the process in creating a database with over +1000 lenses, people will be able to review and rank them through a robust taxonomy.

i want to invest some time and money(seo) into this, i got a good dedicated server.

i'm a pro photog, to the point i can easily write articles on the topic (i know what's the "low light intensity reciprocity failure", etc.)

the revenue would be based on CPC, amazon, selling ebooks and OBVIOUSLY CPA in the price watch pages.(the are some VERY reliable photo shops with CPA programs like adorama)

do you think i should pursue this?

Depends upon what you want and how you want... If you thinking of quick ranking with Photography keyword then forget about it, but if you will pick long tail keywords which also got search volume and less competition and then you are set to go...

Most important thing is you are pro and it's your niche... It may take you little longer then usual IM to rank better in search engines but once they starts picking your site they will give your site more value...

Few days back i was reading a case study of Google where a plumber started his blog few years back... He was not good in SEO but was good in his domain... He wrote quality content and people started to like it... Over time he appeared on different channels and TV shows and that gave his blog big boost... Later on he also worked on SEO and other promotional stuff... Time when case study was written he was making more then 1k bucks daily from adsense alone... Even Google bent it's rule and allowed him to post more ads then normal...

So basically what matters is quality and satisfaction of your visitors... From some times i have seen Google is giving more and more value to behavioral search... So if you are able to retain people, able to make followers then you are gonna do wonder in this niche... In starting you may have to be content with long tail keywords but with time you can rule this domain... It all depends how you plan your whole strategy...

I also have 1 concern - I've always made multiple site at once. I have the fear that when i concentrate my efforts on 1 site, there is a possibility someone will block/steal my domain and I lose everything. How do I defend against something like that? I make backups obviously.

Just don't forget to pay any fees for your domain and your hosting. As long as you pay on time, no one will take your site away from you.

How come you have this fear?

Dude nobody is going to steal your site if you registered it and
don't give away your passwords etc.

Naa don't worry about it... I have hundreds of domains over there, in-fact all my domains are over there... Few are good name and made me good money... I am also building sites with long term plans with domains at godaddy...

Only one thing don't forget to pay your bills and don't do something which is illegal or never cross their TOS which is same case with every company...

If they still do something wrong then you can always go to court and sue them... Although i don't think you will face any such problem... Namecheap and few other big companies are also good option to keep domain...

Photography seems tough. I made a site dedicated to digital cameras, good,digital,cameras,net. It's not doing as well as I hoped. Not enough traffic. I guess i's too competitive a niche.

i think your site doesnt have real value for the user as it uses duplicate content and has many ads. a user would not come back to a site like this.
