I always thought it was better to build backlinks before indexing. Well I would build backlinks and ping those links, and then my site will get indexed pretty quick.

But recently I heard, from someone, that I should index my site first than build backlinks. No idea why, but just wanted to know what you guys think. :nemoflow:

    Cheers

Thinking logically, Google would not expect it to happen. If I had to say, I would guess that it probably would not hurt you, but I can't see a massive advantage either.

My opinions would be not to risk looking "unusual", and just finish your site, then build the links.

I agree with Micallef...if you think about it logically, how can other sites "naturally" link to your new site when it hasn't been indexed yet and, in theory, doesn't exist to the outside world??

I think you guys are looking at it the wrong way. How the heck is anyone supposed to link to a site that appears as #804 in the SERPs? If Google thinks this way, they are truely, truely, retarded.

You were probably told this because someone tried building a huge amount of links to a recently registered domain, and got "Google Spanked", or "Sandboxed (DP's term)". What really happened is that Google probably found that the domain was registered recently, rather than it wasn't indexed before.

I am doing a paid SEO course atm and it states best practise is get backlinks before indexing, it probably looks slightly more organic.

I dont think it would make that much difference either way.

As already said above, logically you would have to assume index first, then backlinks to follow

how the hell do you get indexed?

i thought you just get backlinks to your site and then you are indexed by that. i didnt know indexing was a separate process.

indexing really isn't a separate process. It just sort of happens when it happens.

The google spider bots are on cocaine 24/7. If you create a new website, add your titles, tags, descriptions and content it WILL be found. only a matter of time.

If anything building backlinks will help you get indexed faster because it is FORCING Big G to recognize you. When your link is always on high PR sites that google spiders the hell out of daily anyway, when they see your links on there they will be like 'hmm...who is this new guy? better check out his site"

plus, if you start to build links and buzz about your site and big G hasnt found out about it yet, they are going to get all excited and be like 'hey wait a minute! why haven't WE heard of these guys yet??? we are fuckin google!"

    see what I'm saying?

either way it shouldnt hurt to build links.

Chicken or egg??? What ever!!! Getting backlinks first like all the others said is kinda weird in the eyes of anyone. Why would I link my site if I can't find you in the SERPs??

If you were indexed it would be natural for people to find your site (maybe coz your the only one with that keyword) and thus link to you naturally.

Anyway, kinda have to think on why the hell I even clicked on this thread!! Baah humbug

The only way it could happen on a large scale is if the site was going to go viral in a massive way. Sometimes, people hear of a site before it exists and they link to it in anticipation of it coming online as it will be so supposedly great.

This can happen and it can work well, but if you go for this strategy, you need to be able to keep up with the illusion of going viral. Start as you mean to go on. If you behave unusually, you increase the chance that you will encounter problems in Google.

There's nothing to worry about to get some backlinks before your site is indexed.

I think the idea is if you are a site with some links you get a slight edge over a site that gets indexed with none. I suppose it would suggest a potentially very popular site if indexed with some links. It could also point to a well connected company etc. that has negotiated links as they launch their site?

I doubt it makes much difference. The idea is simply to do a little promotion before trying to get indexed.

Some organic sites are built then not indexed or promoted etc. till later they could easily have some link activity first. I know a lot of web designers that know so little about SEO its ridiculous.

either way won't hurt. you have to keep in mind that Google does offer a lot of leeway when it comes to links. Now, one method of SEO might be better than the other , but its not as easy to get penalized as you think. The worst case many times is a link won't get counted, or its just simply not as effective as another link.

THINK ABOUT IT: if it was that easy to get in the doghouse w/ Google, then you could easily destroy your competition with a bunch of junk links. Always keep this in mind. Google must give leeway for this reason alone.

this chicken and egg argument will never end.

I don't think it matters. why not just post a link on identi.ca, get your site indexed And get a backlink at the same time? i think this subject is being over analyzed. focus on things like what kind of links to build and how often to build them.
