Should I get my degree in web design or computer programming?

I recently decided to go back to school and I know I want to do something regarding computers but I would like to stick more with IM. Like creating websites, maybe some apps and all that jazz. I don't plan on using the degree for a "real" job per se, I just want the knowledge( but of course that could change).

so which one do you guys think should be my major?

If you want to do things for website purposes then I would suggest design, but if you want to create bots and so I would suggest programming

I really want to do both :(
 
Don't go back with the mindset of "I want to make bots and websites". By the time you finish the ICT world would have completely changed and there will be something bigger and better to get your hands on.

The most important thing you can learn from university is that you can't learn everything, the only two things you need to learn are problem solving and how to learn.

Do you think doctors know every disease ever discovered? Of course not, but they are mostly amazing problem solvers.
 
Think about which one appeals to you most. The worst thing you could do is spend 3-4 years studying a subject that you eventually hate.

Agreed, college doesn't really teach the technical stuff, but mostly the mind-set and critical thinking that you need. Programmers can learn the syntax of code in 3 days, but learning the mind-set takes much longer.

Really? I always heard it was the other way around. Most people push others to get Other degrees because they claim marketing Degrees are not worth it.
 
Designer or Programer it's like Engineer or Musician. If you wan't to be really good at something it's not just matter of choice I think you have to feel pasion for that thing..

From someone involved in all sides of the industry a marketing degree is very useful. It opens up a lot of doors and doesn't limit you to one profession.
 
With programming you will have more options for a job, because there are tons of web designers and if you are not creative person you will always suck no matter how hard you try.

well having something to good sell and not knowing how to market it is worse than having someone else's stuff to sell and having a marketing degree, thats what I think at least.
 
Definitely go into Programming. With web design you'll have a much harder time finding a job. An idea to consider is getting a CS degree with a minor in Marketing. This would make your application extremely competitive when looking for jobs.
 
Get your degree in Software Engineering. Any programmers that cannot make money should choose a new profession.
 
Programming.
Code is the new super power. Being able to code opens up countless opportunities.
 
Being able to code is a skill. Skills make you be able to get a job. A job will make you a slave. And I know you don't want that. Learn how to build businesses, learn how to market products, learn how to hire Programmers (or other people with skills) effectively to bring your products to the top. In short: Study Business/Marketing. Or if you wanna do it even more effectively just keep doing what you do and don't go to University but just do it on your own by reading books and studying successfull people.
