I believe people should have the right to carry a weapon. The problem with that though is that most rely on that alone and this will backfire.
When you carry a gun you need to know hand to hand combat a bit too. How to prevent being disarmed just like how to disarm the attacker. Not knowing how to will provide a gun to your attacker in some cases.
The way marusia seems to do it would be a good option IMHO, both a gun and knowing how to fight hand to hand.
Still, when you have kids the situation changes a bit. The thing needs to be locked up, key on your person at all times and the kids oblivious to its existence to prevent nasty accidents. By doing so you lose time in defending yourself though. Just telling a 14y/o to not touch it will not be enough. Let alone the younger kids.
If you want to protect your family: teach them to defend themselves. You are not there 24/7 to do it for them.
