Should I get a concealed weapons permit?

I believe people should have the right to carry a weapon. The problem with that though is that most rely on that alone and this will backfire.
When you carry a gun you need to know hand to hand combat a bit too. How to prevent being disarmed just like how to disarm the attacker. Not knowing how to will provide a gun to your attacker in some cases.
The way marusia seems to do it would be a good option IMHO, both a gun and knowing how to fight hand to hand.

Still, when you have kids the situation changes a bit. The thing needs to be locked up, key on your person at all times and the kids oblivious to its existence to prevent nasty accidents. By doing so you lose time in defending yourself though. Just telling a 14y/o to not touch it will not be enough. Let alone the younger kids.

If you want to protect your family: teach them to defend themselves. You are not there 24/7 to do it for them.

I cannot agree on that one mate. I was raised in a house with a gun, and I was aware of its presence since I was 5, and I NEVER, EVER tried to even have a peek at it alone. My other friend's father had a loaded shotgun that my friend was cleaning from time to time (his father let him do it) and he also never, ever tried to play with it alone, or show it to us (and it was in a glass, easy to reach, cabinet). Another friend's mother is a police officer...same story...

If your parents explain to you the dangers of the weapons and (very important) you are not an idiot, you can have the whole armory in the house without any problems.

Sure thing, some kids are retards and, in that case, weapons should be stored in safe.

I guess we disagree then.

I feel you can, and should, teach a kid to use a gun under supervision and I definitely think kids can handle a lot more than people give them credit for but they are still kids. Young adults with emotions, faults and a whole lot of mistakes to make while growing up. This does not seem IQ related. lol

It is smart to actually show your kids what guns can do as this can prevent nasty accidents but I wouldn't rely on it as kids can be inventive and not always have a good view on the situation.
Just because you were smart enough doesn't mean this can be applied as a general rule. 500 kids die each year in the USA alone, I wouldn't want one to be mine.

While powder guns are not allowed in The Netherlands without strict safety precautions pellet guns used to have less limitations and I did make a few booboo's, my friends did too. And yes, I was educated in using guns.
One of my booboo's killed a duck while I just wanted to scare it a bit. A life lesson as it still bugs me, made the lessons (plural) my father/brothers gave me about not shooting at living creatures stick even more.
I am a pretty good shot but it does not mean I had a good overview of the situation I created. I would not have murdered the poor creature if I had thought about it before pulling the trigger but alas, kids fudge up at times... I didn't miss my target btw, the pellet bounced.

So, I agree with you that a lot of times education will help to prevent but it is no guarantee and taking chances with your kids is not something I would recommend.
I also think it is smart to teach kids at a young age what a gun is and how to handle one but this does not include possible access to guns on their own.

But, the above is just my opinion/experience and I do respect yours.

However judging by your story, I have to wonder if you would killed that duck if you were strictly forbidden, like I was, to point a gun at living things even if it was a toy.
And BTW, I never owned a pellet gun in my childhood, since, as you guessed it, it was considered a weapon, and I wasn't allowed to play with that

You can see that this actually proves my point. First at 17 you are closer to adult then to teenager. Secondly, she was shot in the forehead,
by hear idiotic brother, who was using his mothers gun to shut her up, or was actually high on something.
Secondly, mother told him not to touch the gun, which means that he already did something stupid at some point.
RIP his sister and hope this a*shole stays locked up for a loooong time.

In my state, you need to take a class and pass the tests. So that's what I did and now I carry when I need to carry. My wife approves because I'm responsible enough to own a fire arm and keep it in a safe under the bed that only her and my fingerprints open(My doberman is my alarm so no sneaking up on me ). I've taken her out shooting and she enjoys it too.
As far as you OP, to carry is a personal choice. Jut make sure to get some training so you're not that fool who let off a shot in the mile of Applebees, lol.

If you can, you should. It's empowering, prudent, and tends to put fear into the hearts of the unthinking, the criminally-minded, and the tyrannical among us. For those reasons, you should revel in the fact that you can do such a thing...and do it.

I would suggest you look up your local and or state laws, as some have said open carry might be a choice for you. Open carry just means carrying your fire arm out in the open, personally I wish California wasnt so lame or I would probably open carry.

In my experience and observations of other people's lives, I have to point out something in regards to open carry: even when it's clearly and explicitly legal, and when the law is easily verified, both LEOs and civilians alike tend to either a) totally freak out, b) display and act upon their ignorance, or c) both.

More times than I can count, I'm aware of the cops being called on law-abiding open-carriers, and usually the cops detain the person and/or harass them. Even after calling their supervisor. It's always more trouble than its worth to open carry. (As much as I hate to say that.)

Likewise. I was stupid for doing it though.

I was strictly forbidden to even point my gun at animals, loaded or unloaded it was to be considered dangerous. Also: "A gun is a gun, period!" according to my father when I pointed one of my cap guns at him.
It was a pellet rifle btw. One of those that you have to snap open on the barrel. And a toy considering the things I later owned, correct.

I didn't tell my parents about the duck, couldn't tell anybody what had happened as I knew it would be the end of me holding any kind of weapon in the foreseeable future. And since I did want a chance to shoot with the other, more powerful guns my older brothers used...
Even if the duck had not died and my parents had known about me even taking aim I would be in trouble.
They didn't have a lot of rules, but those they had were enforced, towards me anyways. Shooting in the general direction of animals for fun or killing without a cause would be a definite no go area. I did kill other animals and was even shown how to do it properly, that didn't bug me. But to kill without a cause haunts me still. I saw the poor thing die, nothing I could do about it.

Anyways, I just mentioned it to show how kids can fudge up at times, even with the proper schooling and warnings. They are kids after all. I would not have a gun on display to a 5y/o. That is my opinion though.

But you are correct: That duck would not have died if I had not been allowed to play with guns on my own. Even though I was twelve at the time. Very true. Then again, my brother took it without permission... And yes, he was/is an idiot. That's a story for another time though.

I have a concealed weapon between my legs. Do I need a permit for that?

A little off topic, I heard a rumour that you can get a waiver to have a handgun in the UK if you have special connections? Does anyone know if its true.

I totally agree with you, however I think as long as your well educated on the laws of that matter that you should be fine. Technically they cant detain you for open carry

A gun can be your best friend. But it's a friend who will stab on your back whenever it gets the chance. So, it's your decision ultimately.

I live in a country which is totally polluted with crime. Teenagers are aggressive as hell, Police are there to take you down no matter how good a person you are, they will take you in by charging against you for several reasons that you won't have any clue of.

Still, I don't carry a gun. Instead, I built myself as a weapon. Became bulkier, and learned Jeet Kune Do. That's all I need. Instead of keeping a weapon, make yourself a weapon.

Ive seen a YT video of a guy walking round his neighbourhood in Cali with an AR15 strapped to his back. All the police did was ask him a few questions then let him go.
