Yes! You should remove (not block) them instantly.
Why?
Because they will decrease your posts engagement.
How?
The reason you are not getting good engagement is because they are not engaging and never will.
First the algorithm shows your posts to 10% of your audience, if they engage with it, then it is shown to 50% and they they interact, then it is shown to the rest. That's why likes by your followers will always be less than number bof followers. That's how algo decides quality content.
What's you account engagement rate BTW?

Thanks man , I have been using IG for a year 12 hours a day and I had no idea you could just remove them . I am a dick head . I always blocked

I would try to interact with them first. Instagram could also think they did not like it because they did not like one of their posts(scrolled past or logged off and didn't look at homepage)

your followers will not always like and comment. sometimes people scroll even if they do like it or log out while your post is on the feed(im sure that makes instagram think your post sucked)

Is it good practice to remove inactive followers, even though you'll then end up with a smaller following? Is the rising engagement rate then an advantage to get new and active followers?

Absolutely!
Engagement is more important than followers. That's what determines what's your worth of your post when you go for dealing with brands and while ranking on explore.
It's better to have 100 engaging followers than to have 1000 non-egaging ones.

How do you get rid of followers you don't follow? You can't make them unfollow you. My account is 5 years old and I'm sure I have collected lots of low activity followers (that's what you get with follow/unfollow, even when done manually)
I'd likely have to weed out thousands. Can't block them all, so how is it all possible?
PS: intending to turn my business account into a creator account to get better data and to use Creator Studio for scheduling (and it allows me to use a keyboard to write the posts - hate that typing on the smartphone)

Posted question on @driulis's service. How is it possible he gets all those data without getting the password. I'm technically interested how this could work - because if he can do it, anybody can perfectly scan any other account. And how are fake influencers then still getting away with their fake followers and fake engagement if such tools exist?

I've been hearing people recommend to remove ghost followers for years, but have not seen one instance of posted results proving that doing so increases the follower growth rate of an account due to the higher engagement percentage. In fact, I've seen quite the opposite on a few accounts that have tried mass removals. I think that IG might detect that you're trying to reverse engineer things by removing a large number of followers and act accordingly algorithmically. Tread with caution.

I don't know, IT did not fix my engagement when I tried once and i ended up loosing 10k followers for nothing.

Did you use an app for that? Maybe IG didn't like your use of the app (just like it doesn't like bots) and the advantage you got from getting rid of ghost followers was weighed by the minus points you got for using a kind of bot software...
From what I read it must be done by hand for it to work - so it's a long term project that would go on over months.
I still have to research if blocking so many people could impact your account also - even if you unblock them right away. The block removes the follow, and then you unblock them so you don't have a ten mile long list of blocked accounts.

When I start to clean an account from ghost followers I first schedule a DM to everyone of them in Jarvee auto DM, once I got a reply to my msg I increased my % rate. Than you can decide to block them or not.
