Should i 301 redirect this domain

Calling domain and 301 experts....

So I found a domain, perfect for my niche (almost the same as my domain name) with decent metrics and clean relevant links from sites where I would like links from.

Should I buy the domain and redirect it to my site?

the only issue is that its been expired for a long time (years) so maybe it wouldn't seem natural?

If the links are live, and the domain is clear - go for it. Get it into the index, wait about a month, and then do the 301.

No need of content really - if you add nameservers, and use some indexer, the domain most likely will get back in the index. If not - then you may create 1 page with some text, just to get it indexed.
