Short Domain + Subdomain ?

So we all know how important the Domain is for SEO.
My question is about saving money by not having to buy 100 domains if i want to launch 100 sites..
Lets say i find a good / short .com.net.org domain (4 letters or some words that google doesnt count when searching (and, of, on, the, who)) and then use exact subdomains for my sites.
How much will this make it harder compared to having exact domain match?

example:
mobilephones2011.com/net/org
vs
mobilephones2011.thewho123.com/net/org

IMHO ranking a subdomain over a domain is almost impossible.
Do you see many subdomains ranking for competitive keywords in Google?

Ok that i thought but what if the keyword isnt as competetive (MFA and Micro Niche sites) and there are no domains ranking in the top 10?
only inner pages like domain.com/test/keyword.html or something similar?

I disagree with you there...you can still rank high with sub domains...i have a 5 year old 3 word adult domain and have created 180 subdomains on it and they rank good...ie; my domain is realgoodfilms.com and my subs are amateur.realgoodfilms.com, anal.real goodfilms.com, teen.realgood films.com, etc...
Get my drift?

Yea, I've been thinking about the whole subdomain thing myself. There has been a lot of talk lately (over the past few months) that G has changed the way they look at these and it may become very difficult to rank multiple subdomains.

The other problem that I have with it is that I never like to put too many eggs in one basket where a good chunk of my business can be wiped out easily... but having 50 subs, if something changes, they all go away at once... not a pleasant thought.

Having said that, I just yesterday purchased a domain and setup 50 subdomains for it, just to see what happens to it over time. Not even indexed yet, so I've got a while to go before seeing any results, good or bad.

I hope someone can help answering my question. I posted a tread regarding whether subdomain blogs can benefit from the backlinks and page ranks of the main domain blog or not in term in G ranking. However, no one seems to want to answer my question. Can someone help enlighten me on this.

I basically wonder if it is beneficial at all to set up many niche keywords targeted subdomain blogs around the main domain and only work on SEO and backlinks on the main domain hoping that the works done on the main domain will also help the subdomain blogs. If works have to be performed on all subdomain blogs, then there's simply too huge a task.
