Hi everyone,

I am curious about dropshipping in Shopify. My girlfriend has built a decent instagram following the past few months. (0-10k)

Now she is looking to start making money. She wants to model clothes/products and sell them on Shopify. Then dropship the products.

The idea here would be to have other influencers buy the product at a discount (we would still have a large profit margin). Then offer them commission on any products that they sell. This would be a win win. We make money with the initial sale, and extra sales are bonus. Also, this would increase her exposure/following.

My question is, how reasonable is this plan? Is it scalable 100-300k per year? We both make decent money, so if this is an idea that maxes out at 35-50k then it is not worth it to me. Could it be a million dollar business? Is this realistic? I understand that the journey will be difficult and there will be many challenges. I just want to know that the potential reward is worth it.

Finally, if there is another way to better capitalize off of a female influencer account please let me know.

Thank you!!

First of all, no influencer is going to pay you to get an product for a discount that you want to promote.

You need to supply the product + pay them.

The idea is to sell them on the idea that they will make money off the commission. You don’t know how many stupid girls are out there with 7k followers that have never been offered anything on instagram. But they would love to be an “influencer”

I agree, people with 30k+ followers will definitely want free product and payment. (Products she is looking at are only like 4.50 and look nice), so if she sells them for 45 and offers a 75% discount to “influencers”... That’s the idea, target the 5-10k people

Girls with 7k followers are not influencers, I know a couple girls with 8-12k followers that are not influencers they just like to socialize thus the conversion would be probably shit. The idea is doable and could turn into a big thing but if it blows up you have to look into POD for higher quality products and faster shipping.

Thanks for the reply. Would you mind clarifying on what POD is? And yes, I imagine the products, site design, and business plan will all be modified as we go.

If the item is so cheap, why even charge the influencer?

Your idea of making money might seem as a start but i dont see that you are going to scale this that much.

Simple dropshipped products without your branding are quite bad to promote and im pretty sure your plan doesnt include branding / labeling. Which is extra cost and requires bulk ordering.

If you want to go with Shopify and build a network of influencers there is an app called Refersion. It's basically stand alone affiliate panel for all your influencers with live tracking etc.

These 7k Instagram personas dont have converting audience anyways.

A lot of good insight here, thank you. I didn’t imagine much conversion with the 7k accounts. Maybe a few purchases. I see what you are saying. Branding is something that would definitely come in the future. Right now, this field is just so new to both of us. We aren’t even sure what products we would want to brand.

We are definitely looking to make some money as we develop a more long term model. That’s why I thought the smaller accounts would be easier targets.
