Not building links guarantees you no traffic so what have you got to lose? all marketing campaigns come with risks, it's all about managing those risks

How are you getting traffic to your site at the moment if you haven't built links? Is your site making any money for you? If you're not getting traffic, and subsequently not making any money from your site, then you have nothing to lose by building links. As others have said, start slow, read up on best practices, and keep notes on what you're doing and what seems to work/what doesn't seem to work.
