Yeah 250 word articles is probably the problem.
I'm not sure if a niche that would allow 250 words to be enough to explain the topic.

Change the mindset.

"Traffic was shitty anyways. 1 or 50 UV per day is the same shit. Won't stop until it's 1k UV per day" sounds about right.

well. there goes the answer. i think the same applies to the OP as well. I bet we all just learned a lesson. we can get the best from this and move on to achieve better and more effective ranking in the future.
