Setting Up a Virtual Dedicated Server... Hard or Easy?

I'm thinking of getting a virtual dedicated server, but the hosting company says that i have to 'set it up' unless i want to pay them like $150/month to manage it.
Is setting it up and maintaining it something easy to pick up, or should i just drop the $150/month because it will give me headaches?

Tip:
If your site has strong traffic, you need to replace Apache web server with Lighttpd or Nginx web server (if you can afford, use LiteSpeed), use php-cgi and eaccelerator, as well as tuned MySQL server that will handle various huge traffic spikes easily.

Dedicated server alone with "standard stuffs in it" is not enough.
 
Portalweb is correct about the default configs not being enough as for webservers depends on how much traffic you plan on getting I use apache but the others are better for higher traffic sites. If you know any Linux or at least know some old school dos commands linux will come easier to you. I used to use CentOS for all of my servers but in the last couple of years I switched to Ubuntu LTS for easier server management. apt-get install <packagenamehere> is awsome. And you can get a VPS off of webhostingtalk for way cheap well at least without management. I got one for $12 a month 1gb ram and 2gb burst 50GB space virtualization OpenVZ. I also run a dedicated server from another provider and have it partitioned using ProxmoxVE. I am running 2 VPS's on it right now maybe 3 later. But anyways get a cheapvps install ubuntu LTS and webmin/virtualmin=free for control panel not as simple as Cpanel but free and if you are not running many sites it is perfect. Also pick up a good book or pdf or two about ubuntu, redhat, debian or any other linux distro this is a cheap way to get started and learn. Hope this helps. And a VPS can also be just as fast or faster depending on how many people are on your node and what hardware the node is using. Unixbench is pretty interesting app to run as a benchmark.

lol that's crazy VPS management is hardly $20/month no one charges $150 for management. check your site pm for some offers on vps management

I would suggest looking at HostDime for a managed VPS They will help secure and make sure it is running smoothly and properly.

If you were to get a Dedicated Sever I would suggest server complete they have low cost severs then I would add a management company to help you secure it and take care of the files if you have an problems.

I would recommend platinum server management or sever adminz, I have used both and have had not issues with either.
 
What do they really mean set it up???
Things are very easy in case of VPS so as that of ordinary server and nothing is complicate over there. Better change the hosting company.
 
Really what they mean by set it up is install it on a lamp stack which they probably use a script that takes them 5 mins.....
 
I laughed out loud when I read they want to charge you 150/mo to manage it. You can get a great fully managed VPS for around $25-35/mo at a reputable host.
 
Op $150/month it too much. You can get a VA to manage your servers and it should not cost you more than $50 ($20-$50 varies from person to person). I have a Linux vps server from a guy and the same guy charges $25/month for managing it.
 
They are not easy to set up, however if you have a solid provider you should be in good shape.
 
You can use centminmod script and itll install a LEMP stack. Would take 15 mins tops lol.
