Server Optimization Question

I have just purchased a VPS and it needs optimizing. Is there an expert here or can anyone point me in the right direction? I have been all over the forums and it seems very complicated. I know I have to configure my.cnf and httpd.conf but it seems opinions vary and there are all sorts of different configs.

My set up:
30 GB Disk Space
1 TB Monthly Transfer
768 MB Guaranteed (1.5 GB Burst RAM)

i would also look to have its security optimized too - i will dig out the name of who does our servers, they do a good job
