I am building links to two inner pages of a clients site, for 2 separate keywords. But the site is ranking on the 3-4th page of Google for the homepage on each. Why is it ranking the homepage and not the inner page that the keywords are optimized for? Have i done something wrong? Any help would be great?

It would be too vague to comment like that. There are a lot of factors involved in seo.

The information you have mentioned above is quite less in order to guide you accurately...

Point good quality backlinks to internal pages and ensure you do not over optimize, they should show up higher up in serps soon. For now, Google thinks your homepage is more relevant and popular.

Just keep building. Google probably just giving more credit to your homepage.
maybe even link to your inner page from home page. And keep building links as you are.

I agree with what others have said, but also take a look at HOW much you've optimized these inner pages. Maybe they're too optimized to the point where they're artificially kept from ranking for their keywords (and instead the homepage is ranking because it's less optimized for those keywords). Just a thought, not saying that is what's happened...
