So once you have achieved the #1 spot what do you do? Continue backlink building? If you are ahead can your link lose position if the content isn't ever updated and you aren't doing anymore marketing?

Definately. Continue building links to help it maintain its rank.

Of course. Think about what you're saying. If the person who got to #1, could never be surpassed..then why are we all in IM? As other competitors pass you, your site will obviously move down.

Well I meant, if your links qualities are way ahead of any competition. Does Google penalize if for content that hasn't changed for years?

Hm, can't say for sure, but it never hurts to add content. Update it once or twice a week. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two if you do it yourself. Or you could just outsource it.

Yep update and/or sign up for some services that drip links over time. There are a few here that are set and forget, backlinks genie, link aloha, backlink banzai etc.

You can also do high pr blog comment postings and articles on High PR society and set a schedule etc...

It's different between niche and niche. My recommendation would
be to add a blog to your site, and then interlink your pre-existing
well ranking pages from your new blog posts.

Add in some backlinking to your newly created blog, and Google
won't have a problem with your site, and will likely rank the posts
as a result of this strategy for additional keywords. A win/win
strategy.

adding content on your website I think matters in some cases more than in bound links once your in the top spot. You want to give google the impression that you are the sole authority for that keyword.

For my local seo sites, I do minimal backing and add some content after ranking #1.

I set up google alerts, so if someone else is actively link building for my main keywords, I know about it as soon as google does. Then I will ramp up link building to about 4x whatever crap they are doing.

I see a few spun article links get indexed that are back linked to a competitor site? I do a blast on a high PR network and hit those links with a few hundred amr and SB links.

Google alerts? I didn't know about this. Can you elaborate? Is this in Webmaster tools or something?

BTW thanks everyone for the great replies, they are giving me things to do and plan now that I'm hitting #1 spots.

You can set up google alerts in your gmail account just use keywords you'd use to rank your site.You get an email every time a page is indexed using your chosen keywords.
