These anonymous guys do sound serious, but as long as they are anonymous we can't know anything for sure.
Facebook will go down some day though as some others have also perished. I would be happy to see Google+ taking a step ahead of facebook and this is because I always seen Google more serious about everything.
One single down would be for the blackhat world.. there is still money in facebook...

I don't think everyone realizes how large Anonymous is.
It isn't a group, it's a network with cell's spanning 10's of thousands of people across the globe. (which makes it virtually impossible for any gov't agency to take it down).
If 20,000 people did a DDoS...hitting servers across the globe..it's deff. possible.
However, I'd imagine that it would be a combination of DDoS attacks, Infrastructure hacks, and possible having someone (or multiple people) on the inside.
What's more interesting is that they choose their attacks based upon a democratic voting system.

If you suppose that facebook has 500m users. Suppose further that just 0.1% of their users are online at any given point .... that's already 500k users at a time they can handle. I am sure that they can handle 1% users online or about 5m concurrent users. You would have to be seriously fucking huge to add enough users to make a difference to that. So no, I think a DDoS is unlikely.
Something like that will require a different exploit. As you said, more likely to happen from the inside than just sheer brute force.

I tend to stay away from the politic talk cause its against the rules here. But the thing is, rather he was right or wrong Hollywood painted the picture that they want you to believe. So people are and will always be brainwashed by that.
Myself, for instance, have never heard of Guy Fawkes or Guy Fawkes day before the movie V for Vendetta. So until I started frequenting different alternative forums and websites I thought the story that Hollywood told me was the true one.
As far as the group Anonymous goes, Im not sure what do think about them. The type of power that they want to have can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

I have no idea how big the Anonymous group is but what I know is that facebook is HUGE network, so it already has the power to handle masssive traffic. It's hard to imaging botnet with more computers connected in a given moment than facebook already has.
IMO he only way that might work is massive DDoS with some insider guy/s in facebook causing strategic damages.
