Hi there guys,

I made a post a while back about my server going offline all the time, since then I have loaned my mate the money to get a new dedicated server and we have been having some next problems now!

Basically, they guy who installed the new server (My mates (good mate), mates, mate!!!!!), apparently a genius (not my words, i think he is a dunce, you'll see why), decided to put on a new software, NGinX, and didn't set up the POP3, IMAP or MailMan servers.

Once he got the server to a point where we had FTP back and the sites up, he said the mailing will be done "tomorrow" (1.5 weeks ago now). Since then he has disappeared off the face of the earth, our only point of contact (Mates mate) cannot contact him (left mobile phone messages, emailed, AIM ) and he doesn't know how to sort it out.

I have been looking online for guides on how to install the POP3, IMAP etc but I do not have the log in info to the server, neither does my mate, nor have we been told whether we have: Ubantu, linux or what.

I'm really at a loss as I make all my money through doing mail-outs for musicians and I obviously cant do it, I dont want to buy a service like i see online as I have already paid for the new dedicated server.

My basic question to you all is: WTF DO I DO????

I really am lost, I know you lot know what your doing with server ish and that some of you run your own hosting companies. If there is anyone who can help me in the slightest i will be more then great-full.

If someone reckons they no how to sort everything out quickly we can talk about a fee for doing it as I need this sorted and I really dont know what to do!

Thanks guys!

Do you know root password to your server? Mail server installation is easy!

I Personally dont know it, I been telling my mate to get the root info but he is being so long! If I get this info, do you think it would be easy then?

While getting what you need installed is not a huge issue there is really nothing you can do until you get the access info.

Where is the server actually located? Who is the contact for the server itself at that location? You, your mate or the guy who did the software install? If it is you or your mate then just find someone else to redo the install from scratch.

Honestly though if you are going to be running a business you need to start thinking like a businessman and stop dealing with friends and friends of friends and find real companies to do business with.

Cheers again for replying.

The main point of contact is my mate, that i have known since i was 4. He runs a web site that brings in thousands of visitors a day so he is as annoyed as me.

The server is hosted in dallas with softlayer, it is a dedicated server and my mate is the owner (or renter) of it so he should have the root PW etc. I am asking him for it now....

If you get root account it'll be easy to install everything there, let me know if you need help

You don't need mail server. Just use Google Apps. Easier, more reliable, and you just leave your server resources for other things. The only thing you need is an outgoing server to send email from your web apps.

He seems to know a few things at the very least. Choosing nginx is good decision. It will save you a ton of server memory, not to mention it is lighting fast.
