Serious SEO Questions (Need Immediate Help)

Hey everyone,

I just gained a new client recently for SEO, they have a aged website, and they had seo before, but they need some work to really rank it.

So my question is, what is the best approach to take?

I started with keyword research using MS, and the keyword for newbies guide. Both pretty much listed 3 top keywords that are not that competitive, so I figured go for those and then the main targeted keyword that is highly competitive and organic. Here are my questions:

1.) Is 4 keywords enough? Or how many and how long should I spend researching them?

2.) The client has a page with adsense ads. I dont want to jeopardize his page, but the only tools I have are senuke x. I was thinking I should start slow with social bookmarking and submissions. Please tell me if you think this is good?

3.) Also What is a good SEO tactic to use with SenukeX? Like social bookmarking first, backlinks, then next week rss submissions and article directory submissions? I just want to make sure they are happy and I do a great job.

4 keywords should be a good start. It makes no difference how many you have though. What matters is that you only focus on one at a time and don't spread resources too thin chasing several simultaneously.

Great and what about using Senukex? I feel like it would really help out his site, and can rank it well.

It's not enough! You need to move by dozens of keywords! competitors of your website are moving on them, but you don't? Look for example at semrush, which keywords your competitors are moving. And you can realize how many words is enough.

I suggest you get more keywords , unless you are that good in SEO and can guarantee #1-3 for each of the 4 keywords

1. The number of keywords is dependent on what you and the client agree on. If the client is happy with 4 to start with, then go with it. If they want more, then increase. I find most clients prefer around 5-10 keywords to start with, but it completely depends on whether you can provide great results. A new client yesterday actually TOLD me to bring the number of keywords down to 5 rather than 10, based on the budget. Even better

2. The domain is aged, so you don't need to take it too easy, although at the same time, if it hasn't had any link building done on it before, start off slow. Do your research - use SEOmoz's free OSE tool to study the existing back links to the site, and the top 3 competitors. See how many links each have. Then sign up for a free account with Majestic SEO, and do the same analysis on the 4 sites, and this time, look at the historic link graphs and get a REAL good idea of how fast everyone in that niche are building links. Then emulate them. Seeing as you have MS, make sure to study the top 3 ranking sites for the major keywords - see if you can't steal some of their links as well for some quick wins.....

3. The order you run campaigns doesn't really matter that much with SEnuke. Personally I prefer running content based campaigns first (ie article, press release and video), then backlinking THOSE with social bookmarking, rss and social profile campaigns. Then finally running forum profiles across everything else to boost the links and get them indexed. The thing I try to do is keep the junk links away from the client's site - so NO forum profile links straight to the client's site.

I usually target 1-3 keyword per page.

Having 20 keywords for one page will be ultra hard to rank for.

Best ranking individual pages optimised for 1-3 keywords imo.

To echo some of the above comments, take it easy to start with, I always start small clients on 5 keywords to prove my worth and then expand from there. Only build totally white hat links to start.

Also as above maximum 3 keywords per page, I prefer 2. Another trick, once I have a page at above position 5 for a given keyword, I start building links to another page as well for the same keyword to get an indent/second page (well is used to be an indent) in the SERPS. Once the meet, it seems to give the first page a boost as well.
