separate hosting needed for 301 redirect?

    No, you can do a 301 redirect directly from your domain provider

    No, all domain providers have this option or you can simply add a htaccess file to the domain

    no, you don't need to buy separate hosting package for 301 redirect expired domain.
    Also, you have three different options of what you can do with an expired domain name:
    Use as your main money site
    301 to your root domain or to a page on your site
    Create your own Private Blog Network

    from my experience no you can do it from your hosting account or even through your registrar with the forwarding option etc
    both have worked for me !
