Uuuuuhhhhhhh....FAIL. there is no such thing as white hat seo.
By the googs own terms any attempt to manipulate ranking!!!! So even doing it manually with your fingers crossed and your pinkie sticking out, could still get you a penalty.
There are more cautious approaches but true white hat involves releasing content and praying to the social share God in the sky that somebody might want to write about you and provide a link.

Black Hat: Building Links.
That is it. The second you ask for a link, build a link, buy a link, put a link in a forum profile, comment on a blog and put your link, ect, it is link building. This is against Googles TOS. You can NOT build links and call yourself 'White Hat'.
Every White Hat guy on BHW is a Black Hat wearing a White Suit Coat and selling things to newbies OR they do not understnad definitions.
