SEO Yoast

Is this the real deal plugin for most wordpress sites? I have it installed and it seems when I add all my metas and keywords my google search snippet looks like a bunch of repetitive nonsense.

Another thing is when someone picks out 4-6 keywords to focus their site around Yoast tells you "Oh wait dumb*ss you've used these keywords on other pages before"

What is the deal???

You're using the plugin wrong. How - I have no idea.

SEO by Yoast is pretty good at what it does and is pretty easy to use. Read the instructions carefully and you should figure it out.

The Wordpress SEO by Yoast plugin is meant to be an aid, not to do your SEO for you. You'e still responsible for doing keyword research, creating content, avoiding keyword cannibalisation (more on that below), creating meta tags, maintaining a decent keyword density, and everything else you would normally do with or without the plugin.

The reason the plugin alerts you if you've used the same keyword before is to help you avoid keyword cannibalisation, which is something I mention in my SEO guide (I've posted the part of the guide that mentions it below).

If you find that all of your pages are looking similar, try adding some variety to them and use latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords. These are just keywords that are variations and synonyms of the keywords you're already using, so you can mostly avoid the issue of keyword cannibalisation by using them.

Yes. You can use it. Its one of the better plugins.

Yoast is one of the best already. However, it is not a solve all plugin. It's not something you install and it will magically help you with on-page SEO. It is still up to you to do keyword research and design that page around that keyword.

Yoast just makes it easier for you to design those pages around certain keywords, rather than editing the code on the page yourself.

Yoast is ok for SEO.

It has bugs when it comes to social networks meta data, so better use something else (or correct their bugs by yourself).

Yoast has all those preset keywords, tags, etc for when you don't do it yourself. Maybe you do a reblog of a post, don't care about it for anything except for updating your blog. It can be easy to forget the meta keywords, etc on those content update posts. Yoast fills those in for you.
If there are money pages that you care about you should not be using defaults. You should be optimizing with your keyword and LSI.
It is probably too much to use Yoasts recommendation of 2% or more for keywords. Probably 1% and tons of LSI is enough. So don't just blindly follow the advice.
Once you figure out how to use it you will love Yoast. I try and get 3 or more LSI on a page to have slighly less than 1% so I can get traffic fro more than one keyword per page.
If you have posts that say you are trying to optimize for the same keyword you can combine them or something. It is foolish to try to compete against yourself for SERP
