Would there be a good deal of value in translating articles from another language and reposting them? Would Google detect that it's duplicate content or would it be seen as good unique content?

    Edit: Using a translation tool.

I mean I've read that Google penalizes sites that use Google translate to provide a multi-lingual experience but if I were to take an article from another language, convert it to english and then code something that cleans it up a little (Maybe grammar correction)...

I doubt it would be a duplicated content. If one got penaltized, a low quality content would be a reason (gramma, spelling, unreadable text, etc).

I'm not an SEO guru, but the only problem I could think of is that it wouldn't be properly translated.

Like when you put French into a translation tool, and it comes out in sentences that are completely broken.

Translating content from other language will not create problem like duplicate content. Before using translated content, check your content in Plagiarism Checker tool to whether it is used or not.

If I remember it correctly, Matt Cutts already tackled this in one of the Google Webmaster videos. If I also remember it correctly, it was not deliberately mentioned that it's generally okay but Matt gave a friendly-reminder on the quality of translated content.

The only problem you might face is a copyright infringement, especially if the owner of the content has a dedicated group of people that hunts people who are using their content without the owner's written permission. Ask a lawyer.

If the translated content pass the plagiarism check like copyscape, then it's ok. But, proof read it (correct grammar, meaning, etc..) for better user experience.

It seems to me that by the time you bothered to re-edit the translation to fix the horrible grammar that you could have just made a unique speech-to-text article anyway. I don't like spending time on content unless its going to be high quality or if its getting hyper spun. My two cents.

you could use dragon+word and translate directly with your voice, that way you know it does not come from machine translation and it cannot be recognized by any algorythm... else, I don't know about your language pair but I found bing translation is better than g translate... I myself just stick to the original trados translator's workbench (I bought a licence a while back and it's already paid for itself), the investment is quite a bummer though, it's 700$+ lifetime (you can probably find one that's nulled on torrent sites), but that's how I get grade A content for my sites...

You will have to edit translated content to make it grammatically correct which would add to making it unique.

The bounce rate will be huge and Google doesn't like that.

If you translate the aticle and eliminate all the grammatical mistakes there won't be a problem I have been doing it for long time to get good content. I make sure to eliminate all the grammatical mistakes, and also make few changes in the article headers, and sub headers . The only problem could be that the if the original writers found out that you've stole and translated their content, they can file for DMCA.
