Google distinguishes three fresh content types for searches:
  • Recent events or hot topics. When users are looking for trending or news content.
  • Regularly recurring events. When users are looking for recurring events, such as sporting events or weather information.
  • Frequent updates. When users search for information that changes often but is not really a hot topic or a recurring event, such as product/service research.

The website in question has a lot of regularly updated content (product listings) on its category pages.
After running the test for 21 days, a 4.9% increase in organic clicks to the tested pages.

Did really google change the ranking or just more people clicked because of the 2022 in the title ?

I think the article became more relevant to the search queries + Google also favors updating content.

I don't really think that's some "trick", because it's just common sense to use an updated year in the title.

It's a common practice updating the year in the post/page title.
Can be achieved in wordpress with plugins or code snippet.

But this has existed since atleast 2 years now. Every review site has been adding year in their page title. Did these guys just pick it up? Now that everyone else is an expert but still I used to see "updated 2020-2021" etc. on many websites. It's more of a common sense or a click-bait. But eyah whatever brings more traffic.

Not really.
In search results, google shows "modified date" for my site/pages so I see no point of wasting "title space", even though I've seen some sites adding "updated in 2022" or something similar.

I don't really think that that could be termed as a "waste of title space", but hey good for you if that's what works.
