A Tip For SEOs: Report on SEO revenue!

I know a lot of SEOs don't believe in SEO revenue reporting. I STRONGLY recommend that SEOs do revenue attribution. Even if you don't share the data you should be watching it to know if your methods are improving the business and having the desired effect. If you get negative SEO'd it usually effects revenue for 1 site on google. When the algorithm changes it effects all sites revenues. Tracking Year over Year growth. Tracking seasonal trends in your SEO revenue. Budget forecasting... I know people say that conversions are just as good but the needle moves more with revenue if you are trying to spot a signal in the noise. Rankings fluctuate so frequently that revenue is a much more stable indicator to the success of your efforts.

The other problem in SEO revenue reporting is that people report on Google, Bing, and Yahoo and then say that is good enough. Well... it isn't. If you stop at the big three then you are likely leaving 30% or more of your SEO revenue off the table. Here is a list of all the sources that produced organic revenue for me in June 2016.

These are in the "source / medium" format that Google Analytics uses. You have to search for new sources of organic revenue every month. I create custom reports in google analytics to find new sources of search revenue.

Organic Search is a marketing channel just like any other channel. Most big business will track its revenue in their gross revenue reporting along side all the other marketing channels. When you can start demonstrating ROI with your SEO you have basically locked out the competition from replacing you.

You will feel great when you realize that your efforts not only cover your costs but the costs of the next 20 employees. You can only get there with sound business practices and a watchful eye for what works and what does not.

I hope you found this helpful! Let me know if you would like more posts like this!

    Thanks!
