Without giving away my keywords, I'm trying to rank for 2 keywords. One of the keywords is 2 words, the other is 3 words. Both of them have 2 words in common.

ex. "ps code" AND "free ps code"

my question is - is there a way I can just SEO one kw and it'll take effect of the other. Like if I seo ps code, will that help the ranking for free ps code?

Absolutely.

If you get the one without the "free" ranked high enough, the other will come along with it. Tweak it a little more after that, ranking the 3 word kw, and with time they will work VERY well together.

It's done all the time and a VERY good tactic.

Hope this helps.

Depends on the competition of your keyword. If you're talking something like Apple iPod and Free Apple iPod you'll have to do both. If the keywords you're targeting have way less competition then you could have a solid chance of ranking for both.

One thing I'd suggest though is focusing on both. After all, if you do get ranked your user has indicated what they want. If they type in "free PS code" and land on a page that doesn't say FREE they'll probably just bounce out. Having both pages should increase conversion for you.

Yes if you ranked "free ps code" by default you will get ranked for this "ps code"

You will certainly get better SERP for related keyword, but if your competitors are optimizing for that 3-word keyword then they will always beat you in top rankings. So, the better approach is to optimize for both the keywords as this will also take care of the LSI rule to a lesser extent.
