I'm wanting to register a domain name....the problem I have is all of the preferred extensions are taken....the only ones i have available are

www.mydomain.biz or www.mydomain.com.au which one will rank higher if all else is equal?, I thinking the com.au would mostly rank in Australia but not too well outside. Is this true??

Thank you

If you're trying to target audience from around the world then do not go with country specific tld's in your case AU. Maybe try to split your keywords with one dash or maybe add one more word like "the" and get com, net or org.
For instance
yourdesired-domain dot com
or
theyourdesireddomain dot com

Another thing you can do is add something like "now', "fast" etc. at the end of your domain name. For instance howtolosefatnow.com or getbackwithyourexfast.com etc.

Thanks for your replies.....so does it impact if my keyword is "howtoloseweight" but have a domain as "howtoloseweightfast" sorry for the basic questions.

I'd rather choose howtoloseweightfast . com\net\org than howtoloseweight .some other extension. By the way if you're still not sure pm me and I'll send you keywords for somebodys website that tops the BIG g rankings and it's a 3 keyword domain with "the" at the beginning. Whatever you choose, I'd suggest to stick to .com net or org.

I agree with anfield

Search for a long tail keyword and use it as your domain and anchor text when building backlinks, you will see some big results if you do this right

Yes I agree with anfield too. Add an extra word or two to your domain name and try and get the .com I often add keywordblog.com or keywordwebsite.com and that often works.

Thanks guys appreciate your help....Im asking because so far 4 sites I built are all ranking on page 1 of google...this is the first time I cannot get the domain name i want without sticking another word in front of it or after it.....just not sure what impact it will have by doing this? does it change the keyword all together?

Another thing you can try is adding dashes in different areas. Try all of these:

how-toloseweight
howto-loseweight
howtolose-weight
how-to-loseweight
how-tolose-weight
howto-lose-weight

As you can see, adding dashes gives you a LOT more domains to try. When you do this, avoid using more than 3 dashes at most. I read somewhere that people used to spam dashes somehow and now google doesn't like it when you have too many.

can you put a selling word in there - like "best"-domain.com. If you are targeting exact keywords yes it does affect your seo but not overly. What really affects that is lack of or too many unrelated backlinks and strenght of competition
