SEO question for new forum

Hello everyone,

I'm starting a new forum, trying to target about 10 different keywords. I've noticed that my a lot of my competition have some backlinks (not a lot), and just forum posts with no other content. From looking at the second page, I feel like I can easily get there once I have some forum posts on my website.

My question is, if I started a blog on my forum, and wrote a bunch of articles targeting my keywords, would this substantially help my rank? It doesn't seem like my competitors have anything like this and I feel like if I wrote unique content it could help a lot.

Any advice would be appreciated, and if anyone has any other tips to help improve the SEO of a new forum I'd appreciate it. Thanks

for a forum maybe do not focus on ranking initially but instead get more members from other forums?

Agree with this totally. If you don't have an audience then have a rethink.
Unless your niche is tiny then there are probably already forums that cover it.
Can you do better and steal their users?
Forums aren't as popular these days as people communicate in different ways, like facebook groups, linkedin groups, skype, live webinars etc

This. Your logic is the wrong way around. If your forum is inactive, all the traffic in the world will just leave after seeing your sub-forums. Get a community / following first, forum second. It's the end, not the means.

Build a list on your niche, write some useful trick or tutorial in that niche.
Hide the main points in the tutorial and ask users to signup your forum to see the whole tutorial.
This may work. Remember you have to write some secret information to get more signups.

Go to the social media first and try to develop and a strong base, later you can move on for creation of a forum. Members themselves becomes a great source of seo. Secondly the idea about having a blog with relevant content and targetted keywords integrated ia also a useful one... But first you need some audience and you can manage to achieve some audience or members through social media easily provided that you have something unique and useful for them

I know It's more what Bilal above me says, get some people who know you and want to participate based on that first. A forum is a place where people with a shared common interest that know each other get together - like a convention. It's not a place wher you go to acquire said shared interest Hope that clarifies it a bit!
