    Hi All

My current (and ongoing) SEO project is my own online store selling baby products. It runs on oscommerce and has meta-tag/SEO mods installed.

Domain has been registered and live since Sept 2010, has the word baby in the name and is a .co.uk

We have a number of incoming links from suppliers of products we sell, links from (non-competitive) sites in the same niche, links from forums in the niche and links from a couple of self-hosted WP blogs and we are active on Twitter and Facebook.

We rank well in Google Product Search for specific products and a lot of our business comes from there, however we rank badly for generic terms such as "baby store" or "baby products" but slightly better for terms such as brand names of products we sell.

We also did some paid Facebook and Google Ads a few months ago but the results from that weren't great.

I've used Yahoo Site Explorer and SEO Splyglass to have a look at the site which is #1 on Google for baby store/baby products etc and their inbound links are 95% articles/blog links etc so I've bought a few services off here to boost the site in that area.

The top 5 or so sites in google are well established sites or household names so I'm not expecting to be #1 in a couple of weeks but would appreciate any advice on climbing a few places on generic keywords.

We have money to spend but not £££ per month and I'd also like this to be a learning exercise for me to improve my knowledge and skills so any advice is appreciated.

"Baby store" & "Baby products" are not only very generic but are pretty competitive keywords for a new domain. You may be better off targeting exact search long tail keywords that will get very targeted buyers to the page and will have much less competition hence will be easier to rank for. Optimise a page for a specific long tail keyword and Seo the hell out of it, you will see results much quicker.

I agree, target long tail keywords first before giving full effort to main keywords which is very competitive and generic.
