    Hi
I have been around for about 20 years designing websites and also doing some fairly basic SEO, I have a quite good understanding but everything you learn seems to get turned upside down when you look at a competitor and so on.
I want to go back to grass roots and get a recap on what known and I am hoping to get some really good feedback.
So 1st things first when looking at ranking for a keyword, I want to rank for a service + local currently I rank between 50-70 but I want to take it to the next level and get higher, what should I be doing and what can I mine from my competitors to see what they are doing different to me?

    hi man
    welcome to the game

Plenty of awesome internet marketing blogs out there. searchengineland and moz are something you should read everyday. you will find almost every trick in the book and mostly the whitehat ways (which are generally safest in long run). All the best!

You can use services like majestic (which can be a bit costly depending on how you use/see it) to "mine" their backlinks, keywords etc. From there, you can "steal" some of those links by going to the website and asking for links (with some luck and time).

Well as far as advice goes, there's not a whole lot to go on here for anyone to offer you much. For example, how old is this site you're working on? What have you done so far? Is this company's services heavily saturated locally?

You'll likely just get some rehashed advice in mean time such as, doing keyword research, setting up a google my business page, creating reviews, citations, writing good content etc, etc. There's been some good posts on here regarding local seo which you should be able to find yourself fairly easily. I'd suggest doing that.

As far as competition analysis goes, SEMRush is pretty decent as it offers quite a lot of tools but that can be a daunting. You could just use Ahrefs or Majestic and see what keywords they're targeting and see what backlinks they have.

If you are following the very, very basic SEO principles, like updating title tags, meta data, h1s etc then the next best thing you can do is to focus on generating great content around your service.

Content is the biggest thing in SEO these days, it needs to be relevant and informative around your keywords. If you can manage that, then you will progress higher in the rankings.

Start by looking at the types of content that your competitors put out and if there is an opportunity to re-purpose in your own way/spin it on your service.

Ah, just so I understand, effectively a PBN is effectively buying a few domains, registering these in someone elses name / hide the whois....Create content on those based around the topic of site you wish to move up the rankings.

Do you also recommend having a diary on each project to see what links are added and that you can go backwards should rankings fall?

I love this advice. I will probably be officially joining moz just for this. Does reading the blog count as enough? I use their free resources a lot but not much of the paid stuff because I've never subscribed.
