What would you choose: (explanation would be nice)

browndoor.net
or
thebrowndoor.com

Generally com & net domains have about the same SEO authority, but I'm not an expert, so...

The good thing about an emd.net is that you will not having a hard time diversifying your link.

It will just consider as your brand. for example i have cars.com. I can easily use cars and cars.com as my link.

But if you use thecars.com I will need to diversify my link to thecars and cars. Mostly I do 2-3% main keyword 1% sub keywords then throw some imagelink, domain link, and generic words.

I've found that .com/.net and .org domains all rank pretty similar. If the .com is already registered and the owner knows a little SEO it may be harder to outrank them, but it's really all based on who works on optimizing their site the best. I owned a .org and a .net and was able to outrank the .com, but that's because they had no clue about the most basic ways of optimizing their website. They had duplicate content, etc. I ranked first, they ranked 5th.

To answer your question, getting the .com is not going to make you rank faster than the .net.

Here is the isue with .com/,net.....If the .com is a developed website pick a different name. 99% of the time if the .com is built and you build the ,net you are goiong to lose traffic all the time to the .com. NO matter how good your marketing is when its on print they still will type .com as it is just habit.

The 2 examples you have again I would just chnge the name. The in front of the .com does not help nor doe it look pretty
