SEO in late nineties versus SEO now

In the 90s you could rank for keywords in your meta tag. Add them to a <h1> tag too and you'd rule the SERPs. But back then hardly anyone bought anything online - websites were mainly a way to get your business's phone/fax number out there.

But ad networks might be there and thus some might be earning from it in nineties.
 
SEO in the 90s was basic and easy to game-now it's smarter, user-focused and much more competitive.
 
In the 90's you could rank a website by just using a search term in the domain name.
