SEO in 2017 vs 2015

I have not been here for 2.5 years at least since my websites were hit heavily by Google's penalties.

Back then I was ranking on Page 1 for many keywords, far outperforming the big names.

Some of the tactics that worked extremely well for me then was ranking Web 2.0 pages (for example, Patch.com), ranking Facebook pages and using SAPE links.

I know SAPE is dead already... but how about ranking Web 2.0 and FB pages?

Can anyone give some insight on whether these are still working?

yes you will see some FB or web20 pages in the serps for some money terms, meaning they "can" rank.

Yes they still work, but get reading and brush up on what works in 2017 / 2018 and going forward.

In 2015 you could spam blast cheap public PBN links and sape links and rank high fairly easily. Now things have changed, those 2015 tactics won't rank you above big names. Web2.0's can be good, if done right... but that alone won't be enough usually. Game is harder and frankly costs more money to perform.

It's time to focus on something long term-ish. It took me a while to transit from short term to long term projects, but it was definitely worth it. Short term projects are becoming harder and harder to pull off and to me, they are a waste of money. Much easier to achieve ROI with long term projects.
