SEO guide has never backlink to your homepage?

I've read a guide today that was highly reviewed.

In that guide, when you create a blog/site.. don't backlink directly to the main domain. Just create posts/pages and backlink to those pages only.

It's my first time ever hearing this, anyone know why?
